Most of the major crops like cotton, rice, and sugar cane and vegetables like onion, chilies, and others grown during the summer season in Sindh are badly affected by the recent rains and the resulting floods. For this reason, the prices of vegetables have increased to levels out of the reach of ordinary people.According to the estimates presented by the finance minister on October 14, 2011 in the National Assembly, an overall 11.3 percent loss in the production of cotton has been noticed.

  1. Out of the requested amount of USD 357 million under Pakistan Rapid Response Plan Floods 2011 (September 2011– March 2012), so far only USD 81 million has been received:  a mere 22.7 percent.

  4. Lucky Cement, Pakistan’s largest cement manufacturer donated relief goods for displaced people affected by the recent floods in Sindh, a statement said on Tuesday. It catered to the needs of 6,000 affected families in Umerkot, Sanghar, Tando Jan Mohammad, Sumaro, Naukota and Tando Allahyar.
  5. 464,254 Pakistan Cards have been distributed by the National Database and Registration Authority to families affected by the recent monsoon rains in Sindh.
  6. Tetar Pak and the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to help the flood victims in Sindh.
  7. President Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce & Industries (HCCI), Goharullah and the members of Executive Committee in their joint press statement expressed concern over the poor progress of district government. They said that recent heavy rains have damaged the infrastructure of the city and the insufficient measures of sanitation created problems for citizens.
  8. In Pakistan’s second year of disastrous flooding, one group is particularly suffering – transgender people. According to media reports the transgender community is more socially and economically vulnerable. They are not welcomed in relief camps and do not have access to services which may be available to other internally displaced persons.
  9. According to UN estimates, 1.4 million women and girls of childbearing age in the eight most severely flood districts in Sindh will require immediate access to life-saving health services as well as psycho-social and protection support.
  10. Homelessness and destitution still test the fortitude of people in Badin District even though two months have elapsed since the rain havoc. Crops and orchards on hundreds of thousands of acres of land stand destroyed. People hold the recently-laid drainage system responsible for their misery.
  11. Some 90 per cent of rainwater stagnating in Badin for the last two months has been cleared while the remaining will be drained out in a month, says Managing Director of the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA).
  12. Normality is gradually coming back to Sanghar with people returning to their villages from camps in the city. However, the premises of the district and sessions court, Civil Hospital, and the government boys degree college are still knee-deep in water. The city’s road link with Hyderabad also remains cut off and vehicles have to make a detour through a dirt road, adding 20 kilometers to the distance between the two cities.
  13.  The reoccurrence and widening of breach to 100 feet in the Spinal Drain of the Left Bank Outfall Drain raised the water level in and around dozens of villages near Jhuddo, on Sunday. Irrigation officials plugged a breach on Sunday evening and by night it reoccurred by 50 feet which gradually widened to 100 feet.
  14. Turkish Consul General, Murat M. Onart at a simple ceremony handed over an ambulance to the Sindh government for use in the flood-affected areas. The ambulance was donated by the Republic of Turkey through TIKA (Turkish International Co-operation and Development Agency) and is equipped with state of the art equipment.
